Demat accounts were setup since it was found that in many temples, devotees were donating physical share certificates in the hundi. Given that all shares are now dematerialised, such donations in paper form cannot be used by the temple authorities.
Devotees with demat accounts held with CDSL (like Zerodha or HDFC Securities) can use CDSL’s EASIEST service to donate in a completely online manner. Those with demat accounts held with NSDL, e.g. Kotak Securities, have to use the offline Delivery Instruction Slip (DIS) method to donate.
Devotees should get in touch with the temple authorities to explore getting an 80G certificate for their donations.
The Annual Information Statement (AIS) of both the devotee and the temple trust will capture this donation. There is no tax to be paid by either party since the donation is being done at zero consideration.
Both active and inactive (trading stopped or de-listed shares) can be donated this way.
