What is the Significant Mismatch SMS that taxpayers are receiving?

In December 2025, multiple taxpayers received a mysterious SMS from the income-tax department that looked like this:

(click to open in a new tab)
We have identified a significant mismatch between what you filed in your ITR and records available with the department SMS

Attention [NAME] (PAN XXXXXYYYY). Income tax action required by 31st December.

We have identified a significant mismatch between what you filed in your ITR and records available with the department as of 05th-Dec-2025 for the Financial Year 2024-25 (details sent via email).

You are required to revise your ITR by the 31st December. Go to https://www.incometax.gov.in. Log in and navigate to “e-File” → “Income Tax Return” → “File Income Tax Return” → Select Assessment Year 2025-26 → click “Start new filing”.

In almost all cases, the transaction information above is accurate and you need to revise your ITR. However, if you find inaccuracies you can dispute them in the AIS portal. - Income Tax Department

This SMS says that the income tax department records, specifically AIS, bank / mutual fund / shares / cash transaction data, crypto transactions etc. are not matching with the income tax return for the current financial year.

If you have received this SMS, this is what you can do.

What should you do with the Significant Mismatch SMS?

If you have received this SMS, do not ignore it.

Step 1: Check for Pending Actions

IT Portal Pending Actions

It is a good practice to immediately check if there are any Pending Actions in the income-tax portal:

  • Log in to the IT Portal
  • Check under the “Pending Actions” tab, scroll to “Worklist”.

If there is no Pending Action, check back in a few days.

If there is a Pending Action, please follow the instructions provided related to resolving the issue. This will start the processing steps for the Pending Action.

Step 2: Check under Compliance Portal

Check under the “Pending Actions” tab, scroll to “Compliance Portal”

AIS Compliance Portal > e-Campaign

Here, you need to look at any items that require your confirmation or feedback on items marked with the “e” logo that looks like this:

AIS Compliance Portal > e-Campaign > e-Logo

This should resolve the issue.

Should you revise your income-tax return by 31st December 2025 due to mismatches?

There are two cases here on the status of the mismatch claim:

  • Mismatch is invalid: then you should correct the data in the AIS by providing feedback as described above
  • Mismatch is valid: then you should correct the data by refiling your returns by 31st December 2025 by starting a new income tax return filing. It will be a good idea to take support from a CA at this point
